Classical Voice, Anime, Game Music, and Euro Italo Club Beats Drive nR Element’s Debut Miscommunication (2004)

nR Element brings a trio of voices and hearts to dance music on their debut album Miscommunication. Employing their classically trained voices, Aaron Walz, Eva Maass, and Ana Robinson explore modern communication quandaries, while running the musical gamut from ancient texts to modern Japanese Pop. nR Element has quickly gained a reputation in the Northern California club scene for the visual and aural energy they bring to live performance. The trio dances and interacts with each other, beckoning dancers to listen to the lyrics rather than condemn them as garnish to the principal drum beats.

The name nR Element is a play on words, highlighting the important role of spirituality in their lives (“inner element”), as well as the peace they have found in making classical music relevant to electronic music fans (“in our element”). The most popular track during their live shows has been “Dominus Vobiscum,” which uses a Gregorian text supported by electro
beats reminiscent of The Pet Shop Boys. The Text translates to: “Let us
pray together…Liberate us from evil.” “Adesso e Fortuna” is based on a Japanese love ballad by Akino Arai. Ironically, Walz found that the complications of international music licensing were in step with the album’s central theme, as he cleared music from Japan and Italy for four of Miscommunication’s sixteen tracks.

Other tracks on Miscommunication include influences of Reggae, Japanese Pop, and Trance. Eva Maas, the lead female vocalist, is able to channel her previous experience with Funk and Blues band the Beatmeters on the tracks that call for a more contemporary belting sound like “Bring Me Down.” Ana Robinson is the alto of the trio, bringing a earthy sensuality to tracks such as “So Curious.” The tracks that include the full force of the trio are sure to be the trademark of nR Element’s burgeoning career.
